How to Beat the Afternoon Slump #5: The team approach

Many of your co-workers probably feel the afternoon slump as well. Get together with your co-workers to come up with strategies for keeping your energy levels up and. Here are some great ideas to get our started:

  • Try a group walk around the office building or city block (including taking the stairs) to liven things up.
  • Have a walking meeting instead of a sitting meeting. Get out of the conference room, walk around the block and discuss your business. The fresh air may help the ideas flow more easily too.
  • Take a walk to the water cooler for some friendly office banter, make a phone call instead of emailing or hand-deliver a document instead of putting it in the office mail. Your co-workers will likely welcome a short little distraction themselves.
  • If the lighting in your office is not bright enough, maybe you need to talk to your employer about improving it. We've all seen people fall asleep during a movie. Darkness promotes sleep, so get as much sunlight and electrical light as you can during the afternoon.
  • Encourage everyone to take their afternoon breaks and encourage people to get some physical activity during those breaks.
  • Find out if your employer offers any corporate gym memberships for employees and encourage your co-workers to join with you. Many local businesses in have corporate accounts at Mettler Center - check out our list to see if your corporation is one of them! Take your lunch break to walk on the treadmill or lift weights together.
  • Eat your afternoon snack or have your afternoon cup of tea with a co-worker. Sharing 15 minutes with a friendly co-worker each afternoon can give you something to look forward to each day.
